Where it Began

Thom has been meditating for over 35 years, learning in high school at the suggestion of his mother, a woman whose own practice helped her understand her individual strength, compassion and kindness. Through adolescence, meditation proved to be a useful tool for navigating the complexities of life that arose as he grew into adulthood. The methods he had been taught, helped him to understand his true nature, and the importance of helping others discover theirs as well. With each passing year his practice helped him understand the importance of being of service to others. Several moving sessions helped him to feel the pain of others, which in turn had him counseling emotionally challenged adolescents and adults for several years in hospitals and facilities in the Boston area. When the rigors of counseling became too intense he once again turned to his insight meditation practice to understand it was time to leave that field.

Several years later, working in the corporate world at various companies, he had an awakening. With little hesitation and much insight he left the corporate world to begin writing his first book, Discovering Joy.

Out into the World

With the completion of Discovering Joy it became apparent that the peace he experienced daily needed to be shared with the world. He began independently studying a variety of other meditation practices and beliefs to be able to expand his own practice but also be of the most service to aspiring meditators as well.

In 2015 Thom launched the first episode of Zen Commuter, a weekday podcast at that time which focused on helping listeners worldwide, live the fullest life possible. It soon transitioned to focusing solely on meditation, giving listeners access to authors, thought leaders and meditation instructors that he interviewed. Listeners soon were able to enjoy a shorter podcast, Calmer in 5, a year later. Both shows have been going strong with over 500,000 downloads to date.

In addition to his podcasts, he creates guided meditations for the meditation app insight timer. Currently his guided sessions have been enjoyed by over 60,000 people worldwide.
